How TikTok Knows Your Location, VPN or Not

TikTok does not say whether it detects VPNs, but it does say how it estimates your location: from your SIM card region, your IP address and your device system settings, plus your phone's location if you turn Location Services on. A VPN changes only the IP address, and a regular VPN's data-center address is easy to recognize, because hosting companies' address ranges are publicly registered.

What TikTok says it uses to find your location

TikTok's location information help page describes two routes:

• Location Services. If you turn it on both in TikTok and in your phone's settings, TikTok receives your device's approximate or precise location. It says it may use location information to recommend content, including content near you.
• An estimate. If Location Services is off or not available where you are, TikTok says it still estimates an approximate location from your device or network information, such as your SIM card region, your IP address and your device system settings.

A third use happens once, at signup. TikTok's account region page says it collects location information such as your SIM card region or IP address when you sign up, and uses it to set the country or region on your account. That region does not follow you when you travel or connect elsewhere; changing it is a separate process, covered in How to change your TikTok region.

What a VPN changes, and what it leaves behind

A VPN replaces the IP address TikTok sees with the address of the VPN's exit. That is one input to TikTok's estimate. The others stay where they were:

• Your SIM card region, which no connection can change.
• Your device system settings.
• Your phone's location, if Location Services is on.
• Your account region, set at signup.

With a VPN on, TikTok holds an IP address from one country next to a SIM card and device settings that may say another. TikTok does not publish what it does with that difference.

How a VPN address gives itself away

TikTok does not publish how its systems work, but anyone can look up an address. Every IP address belongs to a network, and every network is publicly registered to an owner. Hosting and cloud companies own large, well-known blocks, and most VPN services run on rented servers inside them.

Three things make a regular VPN address easy to recognize. It is registered to a hosting company, not a home internet provider. A large number of users connect through it at once. And many services hand you a different address, often in a different city, each time you reconnect. What TikTok's rules say about VPNs

Neither TikTok's international Terms of Service nor its US Terms of Service mentions VPNs. The international terms forbid bypassing any measures TikTok may use to prevent or restrict access to its services. The US terms forbid circumventing restrictions, filters, controls or safety measures on the platform.

That draws a line between using a VPN and using one to get around a restriction TikTok has put in place, such as where it has limited access or a restriction on your account. TikTok publishes no rule that bans accounts simply for using a VPN, and stories in forums about what happened to someone's account are not its policy. This is general information, not legal advice.

If you connect from outside the US

• Keep one connection. An account that appears from a different country or city every day gives TikTok a location that keeps changing.
• Know what your SIM card says. It carries your home country whatever your connection does.
• Decide on Location Services. On, TikTok receives your phone's location. Off, it estimates one from your SIM card, IP address and device settings.
• Set the region at signup. If an account is meant for the US, the moment that decides its region is signup. The steps are in How to make a US TikTok account from abroad.
